Our team’s favourite retail brands – and why

Working in retail marketing, it is surprising just how passionate we can be about design, brands and the marketing of brands.

In an attempt to understand what makes our team of creative minds tick, I recently posed the question to them: who is your favourite retailer and why?

While there were no actual arguments, it’s fair to say that feelings ran high and there were more than a few revelations which provided an insight into what they feel makes a brand stand out from the crowd.

Interestingly, it was the design of marketing and promotional campaigns, physical store layout and the use of colours in-store and in their branding, which was most prominent in the decision rather than the utility of products.

Ryan – Graphic Designer

My favourite retailer is the American sportswear company Nike. Their touchpoint engagement, including interaction on their website, advertisement signage and in-store displays, engage me to want to purchase and wear their brand. Nike is considered modern, changing with the times and produces products which fit my lifestyle.

Laura – Marketing Executive

The store layout and visual merchandising for Australian fashion label Kookai, makes this my favourite retail brand. Their soft, lighting, use of greenery and neutral colour palette provide the perfect backdrop to showcase their clothes.

Erin – Marketing Manager

US designer homeware and bathroom accessories chain, Bed Bath N’ Table, has a beautiful store look and feel. I personally love the colour-coordinated homeware displays which I struggle to walk past without going in. They also have undeniably friendly customer service which, in my opinion, is better than their competitors.

Esmeralda – Marketing Assistant

Bohemian luxury fashion label Camilla, is a brand that has seamlessly blended luxury with strength and softness to tell a story with all of their pieces which exude inspiration and imagination.

Lauryn – Marketing Assistant

My favourite retail brand would have to be homewares store Adairs. From their shop front displays to their bedspreads and furniture, the stores and website are always so aesthetically beautiful.

Marisha – Head of Graphic Design

I love the overall illustrative aesthetic and bright colours that kikki.K’s stationery and gifts is known for, which I feel really brightens up my workspace. The designs seem to change often enough that when I do need to replace something, I don’t end up with the same looking notebooks and calendars I would with standard stationery.  I also seem to find it easier to take care of and actually use their products because they are so visually engaging.

Rachel – Senior Graphic Designer

Often my heart is led by my stomach so my favourite retailer at the moment is Australian burger chain Grill’d. I cant get enough of their plant-based burgers and chips! The food is delicious, the in-store experience is consistent, the service is friendly, and I love their Local Matters Community Support Program.

Catherine – Administration

My favourite retail brand Swedish clothing retailer H&M. They have good quality clothing at more affordable prices and have started using more eco-friendly materials. They also have old clothing collection boxes and I like that commitment to sustainability.

My pick is…

My own favourite is international Luxury body products and fragrances retailer L’Occitane en Provence. It has been trading for more than 45 years and has shown it stands the test of time.

It is not an expensive brand but exudes quality and luxury and the product packaging and marketing is beautifully achieved and consistent.

One of the most appealing attributes of L’Occitane en Provence for me, is that they use all naturally sourced and grown ingredients and promote biodiversity in their products.

They also strongly advocate for many marginalised communities around the world including empowering women which is something that is important to me.

When it comes to the answers provided the Strictlymarketing team, I am genuinely excited! It is wonderful to see such passion and fire for what they do and makes me excited about what we can achieve as a team!
