My name is Esmeralda and I’ve been a digital and social media intern for the past two months at Strictlymarketing. I got to complete an internship as a part of my degree with a work-integrated learning unit at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), studying a double degree with a Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Media and Communication majoring in Advertising. I’m currently in my fourth year of study and am driven to become an advertising or marketing practitioner in the future. The particular aspects that stood out to me when applying for the internship at Strictlymarketing were their company values and the agency style of work. This really appealed to me as something I wanted to experience for my real-world placement.
The start of my internship journey began when I first met Bev Strickland, the Director of Strictlymarketing, for my interview. I instantly fell in love with the position and of course how could anyone resist Bev’s charms! From the get-go, it was so clear that Bev was a strong leader and passionate about what she had built with her organisation and it only made me want to join even more. Before I even got home from my interview that day I got an email from Bev detailing that I had been offered a position with Strictlymarketing and I was over the moon.
Then just before I could start, the first wave of the coronavirus spiked. Bev and her team were in regular communication with me and doing everything they could in their power to make this internship work for me, and it did! I spent the duration of my internship working from home which flipped my expectations on its head. On my first day, I got ready like any other workday pants and all! I was nervous as to if I would be meeting the expectations of such a fast-paced industry but the Strictlymarketing team made me feel so welcome and gave me all the support and more with my work.
During my time at Strictlymarketing, I had the pleasure of working with Marketing Executive Rebecca Holeszko as my supervisor throughout my experience. Working with Rebecca was so valuable to me as her professional guidance and eye was so inspiring and really helped me become more critical of my own work. With Rebecca, I was able to work with a wide variety of clients from those in the retail sector to non-profit organisations. Working with up to 10 clients, I was able to grasp the fundamentals of client management, expectations, and planning involved to ensure the success of a marketing campaign and strategy.
My time at Strictlymarketing has allowed me to grow and expand on my current skill set and learning from my degree while giving me the valuable experience of what it’s like to put those skills in practice. Some experiences that I have taken away include the fast-paced environment, client liaison and expectations, and the digital learnings that I would not have been able to fully indulge in without this internship as a part of my degree.
I would like to honourably thank Bev Strickland, Rebecca Holeszko and the entire Strictlymarketing team for allowing me to be a part of such a warm and professional environment for my first internship experience. This is something I will never forget along with all the valuable experiences that I’m sure will be of use in the progression of my career.
