The shopping centre of the future may not be a sprawling space of stores, punctuated by the occasional donut stand and cinema, but a platform on your phone.
Imagine: a million stores made just for you, selling only the things you’re likely to buy, based on what you’ve bought in the past or how you’ve behaved online.
Instagram launched their enhanced shopping solutions in 2018, which included features such as shopping stickers in Stories and a shopping channel in Explore.
In March this year Instagram announced that it’s testing a new feature called Checkout, which will allow users to buy products from fashion, beauty and other brands for its shoppable posts in the app. In a statement Instagram said “Shopping is more than an errand – it’s also about what you discover along the way. For many people on Instagram, shopping is an entertaining way to get inspired and connect with new and interesting brands.”
With the following Instagram stats for business accounts there is no doubt Instagram gives your business an immersive storefront for people to explore your best products.
- 25 million + business profiles worldwide.
- 2 million + advertisers worldwide.
- 60% of users say they discover new products on the platform.
- 200 million + Instagrammers visit at least one business profile daily.
By streamlining the process of purchasing things within its mobile app, Instagram hopes to become your own personalised shopping centre.
How will it work?
Instagram says that when you view a checkout-enabled product in a post or story, the user will see the option to ‘checkout on Instagram’. From here you can select from various options such as size and colour. You will then proceed to payment without leaving Instagram.
After filling out details like your name, email, billing information and shipping address you can proceed to payment without leaving Instagram. Your information will be saved for the next time you shop within the app.
After placing an order, a user can view their order status, estimated delivery time and tracking number, ability to cancel orders or request additional support all with the app.
Will it be a game changer?
There are still many details to be clarified for Instagram checkout so it is difficult to know if it will be a game changer for online shopping or if it more likely to be a great tool for many companies but not something that radically changes the shopping landscape.
As these solutions roll out, the best way to make checkout on Instagram profitable for your business is to have an actively engaged community willing and ready to buy.
For brands and businesses, using Instagram shopping posts is a great way to showcase your products and use your Instagram feed to drive more purchases. You can create awesome posts with tagged products for easier shopping for your followers.
